Foreword

Welcome to the website of the School of Social and Economic Sciences at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Our School, comprising three academically and scientifically distinguished Departments – Political Science, Journalism and Mass Media Communication, Economics– serves as a vibrant hub of knowledge production and dissemination, cutting-edge research, and ongoing social engagement.

Our mission extends far beyond teaching and research excellence. We aim to cultivate active, critically minded citizens, capable of responding creatively to the complex challenges of our time: social inequalities, democratic backsliding, economic instability, environmental degradation, rapid technological advancement, and the urgent need for sustainable policies and resilient institutions.

As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, we reflect on our journey and renew our commitment to society. AUTH is not just the largest public university in Greece; it is a living institution that evolves, innovates, and inspires. We believe in a university that is open to all, democratic in its structure and values, and pioneering in science, education, and social impact. In this direction, our School actively contributes to the realization of a university with both social and global responsibility.

Our strategic priorities are grounded in three core pillars:

  • Internationalization: We are constantly enhancing the School’s global presence through academic collaborations, mobility programs, joint degrees, summer schools, research networks, and participation in international scientific initiatives. We aspire to be an active participant in the global dialogue on the pressing social, economic, and political issues of our time.
  • Connection with society and the labor market: We develop programs that strengthen the career prospects of our graduates, foster research, analytical, communication and managerial skills, and build bridges with public and private sector institutions. We promote internships, collaborations with organizations, and the practical application of academic knowledge.
  • Social responsibility and civic engagement: Our School is not detached from society. On the contrary, it promotes scientific knowledge as a driver of social change. We support socially oriented research and encourage the active involvement of students and faculty in initiatives related to culture, volunteerism, democratic dialogue, and intergenerational justice.

This website serves as a reference point for our operations, programs, initiatives, and values. Whether you are a prospective student, a partner institution, an alumnus, or a citizen interested in the role of public universities in our time, I warmly invite you to explore, learn more, and – why not – get involved.

The School of Social and Economic Sciences remains steadfastly committed to defending democracy, advancing scientific excellence, and promoting social progress. We invite you to be part of this journey.

Sincerely,
